Overview 1955-1999. After some 30 years as an 'unofficial' artist in the Soviet Union, lIya Kabakov (b.1933) first came to international recognition in the late 1980s; now based in New York, he is considered the most important Russian artist of the late 20th century. His installations are akin to theatrical mises-en-scènes or comedies on human frustration and doomed aspirations, presenting, for example, a cramped communal apartment or a flooded art museum .
