Published on the occasion of the exhibition project 'Populism', produced by NIFCA-The Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art- in collaboration with CAC, Vilnius; National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design, Oslo; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, 30 April / 28 August 2005; Frankfurter Kunstverein. (see also The Populism Catalogue). The exhibition considered populism as a ‘pervasive cultural phenomenon’ and sought to explore the current manifestations of populism, particularly in Europe. This focus also regarded questions of how certain populist demands for ‘access,’ ‘high visitor numbers’ and ‘entertainment’ had found their way into the contemporary art field and its institutions themselves. Other themes included: ‘the mass media projection of politics; market populism and the cultural industries; group and corporate identities; representations and spaces of ‘the people’: law, order and security; religious and moral controversy; nationalism and xenophobia.’
