Publication associated with the similar named exhibition by Ângela Ferreira, on display in Serralves, Porto from April 10 to May 23, 1999. The work of Ferreira, having been born in Mozambique and lived in South Africa, questions, in a particularly critical attitude, historical, social and ideological codes and references through the use of photography, sculpture and video. The house in this installation is a referent situated in a dual and all-embracing domain, that of a space alluding to an extended, territorial, political and historical contingent and to an intimate and affective microcosm – that of the memory. Reflecting on the issues of cultural superimposition and on the limits of cultural and ethnological assimilation in colonial contexts, the space in which the house is represented is projected onto scientific models of cartographic projections, thereby displacing the distortion of the memory and the centralization of a point of view to a scientific space. The association of color with the past and of black and white with the present accentuate the personal symbolic readings, between the idyllic landscape of an idealized colonial Africa and its consequent maladjustment/cleansing in a different historical time.
