Illustrated essay written by Tan to accompany the first presentation of her installation Ruins at the exhibition Archive/Ruins, at Peter Freeman, Inc., New York, Jan. 9-Feb 20, 2020. ‘Ruins’ was filmed on location at Le Grand Hornu, Belgium, a historic industrial mining complex in the Borinage region. The site is an important example of neoclassical industrial heritage of the Industrial Revolution and an early example of functional urbanism at the beginning of the 19th century. Henri De Gorge built the urban district, workshops, offices and the owner's residence "Château De Gorge" between 1810 and 1830. The neoclassical style uses archways, gable triangles and semicircular windows. (see also: Architectuur en onbehagen ; Architecture and Discomfort.
