In conjunction with the Wolfgang Hahn Prize 2016, the Gesellschaft für Moderne Kunst has published an artist book by Huang Yong Ping, which the artist had already started working on in 2004, shortly after producing his sculpture Mémorandum: Bat Project I, II, III, 2001–2003. In the work Mémorandum the artist documents and reflects upon the history of his Bat Projects. The starting point for these works was the collision of a US American EP-3 espionage airplane (also known as a ‘bat’) with a Chinese military airplane over the South China Sea in 2001. All three Bat Projects were censored shortly before they were to be exhibited.
