Born in Copenhagen, artist Poul Gernes (1925–1996) founded Esk-skolen, an art college, together with Troels Andersen in 1961, where he and his students, including Per Kirkeby, experimented with new forms of expression such as happenings, 8mm film, and environments. Influenced by Pop Art and Minimal Art, Gernes created series of images that appeared to be industrially produced but were individually handmade and unsigned. In the early 1970s, Gernes stopped producing classic mobile artworks and instead designed the interiors of over 80 buildings using color concepts. Gernes rejected the art market and the art scene and thus remained virtually unknown outside Denmark. Art historian Michael Krebber came across Gernes' work in Copenhagen and introduced it to artist Cosima von Bonin, who immediately understood it due to her own approach. In 2001, von Bonin integrated Gernes' target paintings into her exhibition “Bruder Poul sticht in See” (Brother Poul Sets Sail). During this exhibition, the idea of a first retrospective of Poul Gernes was born. Together with the retrospective to which it refers, this book offers Germany its first long-overdue access to the work of Poul Gernes. It is being published on the occasion of the exhibition “Poul Gernes – Works from 1960 to 1996” at the Kunstverein Braunschweig.
