Star City revisits how the future was experienced and imagined under Communism through the works and words of artists, designers and writers. It concentrates on the interaction of three timeframes: our own post-communist era, the Khrushchev Thaw of the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, and the Soviet avant-garde of the Revolutionary period. It is also evoked via allusions to the utopian, religious and scientific thought of the Russian Cosmists of the 19th and early-20th Century. Without reference to Cosmism it is impossible to fully understand the science fiction and avant-garde art of 1910s and ‘20s, or the quasi-religious significance that venturing into space reresented for Soviet subjects into the 1960s.
