Mark Wallinger's Ecce homo has been exhibited in various contexts, but it was originally a site-specific installation intended for the famous Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square in London. It was the first work of art in a series of works by various artists to be installed there. When Wallinger was invited to deliver this work in 1999 as a ‘millennium project’, the intention was that it would remain in this location permanently. It was only later that the plan arose to place a new work here every 18 months
