In 1936 Duchamp began work on the making of a 'portable museum' that was to contain his principal works in miniature. On January 1, 1941, he made public the first copy of his multiple in Paris. It was a cardboard box that fitted inside a handy valise and contained a total of sixty-nine miniatue replicas, models and reproductions of his works.
